Carla Unger was a researcher working for Morse Laboratories, who was investigating a sample of the Carnage symbiote provided to Morse by Spider-Man. When analysing a fraction of the sample, she received a phone call from her abusive husband, Will. The tissue sample reacted to her hatred of him and entered her body through her left eye. Carla burned the rest of the sample and left to her house, as she was being waited for by Will.
